Interview with Tracy Lee Stum, internationally-recognised American street painter and author who specialises in interactive 3D chalk art street paintings<\/strong><\/h4>\n

<\/p>\n

Born in Pennsylvania, Tracy began drawing as soon as she could hold a crayon in her hand. She studied privately as a child and completed her Bachelor\u2019s degree in painting and drawing at the Tyler School of Art \/ Temple University in Philadelphia. She discovered street painting by chance in 1998 and made the decision to pursue this art form full time. She has also been privileged and honoured to serve as a US State Department arts envoy since 2008, touring Tajikistan, Thailand and India, demonstrating and teaching 3D art workshops at universities and art colleges to promote education, awareness and positive cross-cultural exchange.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Could you tell us <\/strong>more about your job<\/strong>? Where do<\/strong> you <\/strong>get<\/strong> the <\/strong>ideas for your paintings,<\/strong> and how do you choose the <\/strong>locations at which<\/strong> to <\/strong>create<\/strong> them<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been practicing the street painting art form for about 23 years. I began by painting classical masterpieces in chalk pastel on <\/em>pavements<\/em>, then transitioned into the interesting 3D style. I <\/em>have <\/em>found <\/em>that <\/em>this <\/em>allows<\/em> me the greatest freedom of expression. <\/em>The idea for a <\/em>work may develop from the <\/em>location <\/em>or<\/em> place where I will be painting<\/em>,<\/em> from <\/em>themes<\/em> in <\/em>contemporary<\/em> culture that I find intriguing<\/em>,<\/em> subjects <\/em>that <\/em>I <\/em>consider particularly interesting,<\/em> or <\/em>again,<\/em> imaginary ideas that I feel would translate well into a 3D image. <\/em>In addition, <\/em>I often incorporate a subtle <\/em>humour<\/em> into<\/em> my pieces<\/em>,<\/em> which <\/em>may encourage viewers <\/em>to look deeper into the image I\u2019ve created.\u00a0<\/em>The places that I choose for making <\/em>the work <\/em>depend<\/em> on availability. In the <\/em>United States<\/em>, street painters are usually relegated to official festivals and <\/em>authorised<\/em> events <\/em>at which <\/em>to create their <\/em>pieces<\/em>. Most street painting festivals allow a broad range of subject matter, which naturally <\/em>permits<\/em> the <\/em>greatest<\/em> freedom of expression.<\/em><\/p>\n

How has the work of an artist <\/strong>such as yourself<\/strong> changed in this long<\/strong>,<\/strong> difficult <\/strong>year of <\/strong>global pandemic?<\/strong><\/p>\n

To a degree my work <\/em>moved<\/em> from street to computer during <\/em>the <\/em>pandemic. 2020 was spent planning my latest project<\/em>,<\/em> TiLT: A Tracy Lee Stum Museum. I built models, drew up plans, selected <\/em>colour<\/em> palettes, designed graphics, etc<\/em>.,<\/em> all in my home studio. This was already on my schedule so I simply transitioned into <\/em>the <\/em>design<\/em>\/planning<\/em> mode <\/em>during<\/em> lockdown. I feel extremely lucky that my <\/em>calendar<\/em> was not disrupted <\/em>excessively during<\/em> 2020<\/em>,<\/em> as I am acutely aware of how difficult it has been for many <\/em>people <\/em>around the <\/em>world<\/em>. I tend to go inward and <\/em>conceptualise<\/em> future work when I am <\/em>subjected to restrictions, and <\/em>I <\/em>think that this is<\/em>the best use of my creative energy.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Where did you meet our humanoid robot iCub<\/strong>,<\/strong> and when and why did you think of <\/strong>featuring<\/strong> it <\/strong>in <\/strong>a 3D painting?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I discovered <\/em>the <\/em>iCub on line through some videos when I was researching robots for a project. That project did not <\/em>go ahead,<\/em> but I found the iCub so appealing that I wanted to create an image using <\/em>this<\/em> robot for one of my own compositions. I\u2019m interested in how people view technology <\/em>and<\/em> how it impacts our lives. Robots tend to be misunderstood in society, <\/em>and gain \u2018sci-fi\u2019<\/em> or \u2018<\/em>alien\u2019 <\/em>labels. <\/em>I thought that of the many robots I researched, the <\/em>iCub had the most <\/em>humanised<\/em> and<\/em> appealing features (<\/em>face <\/em>\/<\/em> eyes) <\/em>and I felt that this <\/em>made it more accessible <\/em>and likeable<\/em>. I wanted to convey this in the street painting design I created, hoping <\/em>that <\/em>viewers may discover an interest in learning about robots and why we associate certain labels with them.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Have you ever thought that robots could replace artists like <\/strong>yourself<\/strong> in the future<\/strong>,<\/strong> or <\/strong>that perhaps<\/strong> they could help<\/strong> you<\/strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, in <\/em>fact I <\/em>know of the existence<\/em> of new robots who can paint large street art murals without a human <\/em>having to lift<\/em> a paint brush! <\/em>In this case, the <\/em>creativity <\/em>lies entirely in <\/em>the design and programming. For tough physical work, this could be <\/em>of great<\/em> help to those artists who may not be able to handle the stresses and strains of this demanding <\/em>sort of activity. Personally, all considered, <\/em>I still prefer to hold a paint brush in <\/em>my <\/em>hand!\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Can you tell us how <\/strong>you <\/strong>would imagine a robot <\/strong>at<\/strong> your side <\/strong>helping<\/strong> you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps for mixing <\/em>colours<\/em>, and preparatory<\/em> work that I\u2019d rather not do. Particularly moving large objects or setting up a work site! I\u2019d need to understand the robot\u2019s capabilities<\/em>:<\/em> perhaps a robot’s <\/em>assistance in<\/em> developing and building new project applications <\/em>and<\/em> installations would be useful.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
