{"id":18128,"date":"2016-07-11T13:58:32","date_gmt":"2016-07-11T11:58:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/?p=18128"},"modified":"2023-06-15T16:35:40","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T14:35:40","slug":"laura-cancedda-selected-for-the-kavli-network-of-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/en\/laura-cancedda-selected-for-the-kavli-network-of-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Cancedda selected for the Kavli Network of Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federation of European Neuroscience Societies has selected Laura Cancedda, researcher at IIT, among the 15 new scientists of the Kavli Network of Excellence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more--> <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-189\" src=\"http:\/\/talk.iit.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/2016\/cancedda_ritratto_piccolo.JPG\" alt=\"Laura Cancedda IIT researcher\" width=\"407\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the 30 June the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fens.org\/\">Federation of European Neuroscience Societies<\/a> (FENS)&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fens.org\/Global\/Pages\/Kavli\/Press%20Release_New%20Scholars%202016%202020.pdf\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;the names of the <strong>15 newly selected scholars of the FENS&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Kavli Network of Excellence<\/strong>. The FENS Kavli Network scientists are&nbsp;chosen for the <strong>originality and impact of their research activity in&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>the neuroscience area<\/strong>. FENS aims to improve neuroscience in Europe by&nbsp;putting these young researchers in the driver&#8217;s seat. They should communicate to&nbsp;the citizens how important is understanding the brain funcioning and encourage&nbsp;science policy to connect fundamental research and innovation&nbsp;technology so that society can take advantage of it.<\/p>\n<p>Among the newly selected scientists there is also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iit.it\/people\/laura-cancedda\">Laura Cancedda<\/a>, principal investigator at the Italian Institute of&nbsp;Technology (IIT) and scientist of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telethon.it\/cosa-facciamo\/il-metodo\/gli-istituti\/istituto-telethon-dulbecco\">Telethon Dulbecco Institute<\/a>.&nbsp;At the IIT facility she coordinates since&nbsp;2008 a research group composed by 10 people, both PhD students and&nbsp;Post Doc&#8217;s, investigating the neurogenesis, migration and morphological maturation of cortical neurons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very glad I have been selected to join the FENS Kavli Networkof&nbsp;Excellence. To me this represents a great honour and an <strong>extraordinary&nbsp;opportunity<\/strong>. The network is an <strong>exceptional platform to promote the&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>importance of fundamental brain research outside the scientific&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>community<\/strong>. Contributing to make citizens and decision-makers familiar with&nbsp;these issues initiates a positive feedback loop which finally allows&nbsp;researchers to work in the best possibile environment and improve&nbsp;citizens life&#8221;. A remarkable example of such improvements was&nbsp;achieved last year by Laura Cancedda and her group. Using a mouse&nbsp;model, they showed that a well-known diuretic drug is able to mitigate&nbsp;the cognitive symptoms in the Down syndrome.
