{"id":18155,"date":"2016-06-16T12:17:33","date_gmt":"2016-06-16T10:17:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/?p=18155"},"modified":"2023-06-15T16:35:55","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T14:35:55","slug":"smart-labels-and-solar-panels-one-day-at-the-iit-milan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/en\/smart-labels-and-solar-panels-one-day-at-the-iit-milan\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart labels and solar panels: one day at the IIT Milan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From printed and flexible electronic to the Internet of Things, a \ttour among the new technologies developed by the IIT Center for \tNanotecnology.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more--> <\/p>\n<p> \t&nbsp; \t<iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/spmudlbYlys?rel=0&#038;feature=youtu.be\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <\/p>\n<p> \tIn the shade of Milan&rsquo;s first reinforced concrete building, known \tas &ldquo;The Kremlin (1927)&rdquo;, in the heart of Citt&agrave; degli \tStudi, you&rsquo;ll find the<strong> IIT Center for \t\tNanoscience and Technology<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iit.it\/centers\/cnst-polimi\">&nbsp;(CNST IIT)<\/a> \t<\/strong>. Here&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iit.it\/index.php\/people\/guglielmo-lanzani\">Guglielmo \t\tLanzani<\/a>, dividing his time between the Center and the Politecnico, \tconducts an orchestra of nanotechnologists coming from all over the \tworld. Average age is 30, they get here cycling, English and Italian \tmixing up while they put on their shoe-covers and smocks before \tentering the microelectronic lab. &nbsp; <\/p>\n<p> \t<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iit.it\/index.php\/people\/mario-caironi\">Mario \t\t\tCaironi<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> an ERC grant in printed electronic from \t\tCambridge, shows us around<\/strong>. Back in Italy, he obtained the teaching \tqualification, but resulted as much excellent as \t&ldquo;unsuitable&rdquo; for the electronic engineering chair. <strong>The \t\tIIT was able to call him back to Italy<\/strong> by offering him a lead \tresearcher position and negotiating a salary adequate to his ambitions, \tsomething that would have been quite impossible anywhere else in Italy. <\/p>\n<p> \tThe first machine that you see entering the room is an <strong>industrial \t\tprinter loaded with a PET plastic sheet sliding over a roll<\/strong>. It prints \tout micro solar panels that, instead of silicon, use photosensitive \torganic substances. <\/p>\n<p> \t<a href=\"http:\/\/omet.com\/it\/\">OMET, a company based in Lecco<\/a> and \tspecialized in high technology printing, has provided the printer. \tUsually printing anything from food labels to scratch-and-wins, OMEC \thas now seen a new possible market, thanks to the IIT studies,<strong> \t\tin these micro &ldquo;solar&rdquo; panels implantable onto sensors and \t\tsmall household<\/strong> or office appliances and capable of providing their \telectrical supply by exploiting also artificial light. A small \tmicroelectronic revolution that will allow powering all the many \tdevices connected to the mains supply or charged by batteries so far. \tNow some kind of plastic label &ldquo;brushed&rdquo; with \tphotosensitive material able to generate electricity from light, \tartificial light included, will be enough. <\/p>\n<p> \tTo sustain this new adventure, OMET and some of the IIT researchers who \thave been working on the micro panels for the last few years &ndash;<em> \t<\/em>Antonio Iacchetti and Michele Garbugli, the director of the IIT Centre \tGuglielmo Lanzani, Mario Caironi and Dario Natali (Professor at the \tPolitecnico di Milano affiliated to the IIT) &ndash; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ribestech.it\/\">have founded the start-up <strong>Ribes \t\t\tTech<\/strong><\/a>. <strong>OMET will fund all Ribes activities<\/strong> and will \tprovide the printing machines necessary for the electronic production. <\/p>\n<p> \tPrinted electronic is a new sector in full development, with many \tpossible applications. From the different workstations within the IIT \tLab in Citt&agrave; Studi, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers \tare busy experimenting the <strong>new printable devices: \t\tmicro transistors, photo detectors, thermoelectric materials able to \t\trecover energy from heat dispersion<\/strong>. The challenge &ndash; explains \tMario Caironi &ndash; will be to power all the devices in the growing \tworld of the <a href=\"https:\/\/it.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_delle_cose\">Internet \t\tof Things<\/a>. Not just powering them with the energy that can be \t&ldquo;squeezed&rdquo; from heat dispersion or artificial building \tlighting, but also making this object &ldquo;smart&rdquo; employing \tnon-classic electronic.&nbsp; One of the applications they are \tcurrently working on in this lab, for example, is the &ldquo;digital \tplate&rdquo; for x-rays, or small sensors able to <strong>measure \t\tthe blood oxygen percentage without pricking the patient&rsquo;s \t\tfingers.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p> \tAt the IIT Center in Milan they are also <strong>studying \t\torganic transistors<\/strong> that can be ingested. <strong>The \t\tmicrocircuits are printed using compatible organic substances like \t\tshellac and cellulose<\/strong>, the same ones used for children tattoos and \tdecals, to be clear. These labels are slightly more than one \tcentimetre-squared and could be stuck onto one cherry, one slice of ham \tor a drug capsule. At all effects, they are just like tiny transmitter \treceivers that, by entering our organisms and before digestion destroy \tthem, can monitor chemical-physical parameters and communicate them to \tthe outside. <strong>The goal could be to find out if patients \t\tare regularly taking their medicines or to measure their internal pH, \t\toxygen concentration, presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so to \t\tpromptly implement personalised therapies<\/strong>. The development of these \tdigestible devices involves groups of doctors working at the IEO, San \tRaffaele and other Hospitals, whom are interested in these new \tdiagnostic tools.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p> \t<strong>Micro labels will be largely employed also by the \t\tresearch on food conservation and traceability<\/strong>. From within the \tpackage, in fact, they will be able to send information about the \torganoleptic qualities of the food, making the expiry date more checked \tthan ever.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p> \t<strong>Everything in the IIT labs in Milan starts with \t\tfundamental physics experiments and ends with the development of the \t\tdevice, <\/strong>for the technological transfer. Like the pump probes, used to \tstudy the electronic processes of materials and semiconductors over \ttime, which have a femtosecond (10<sup>-15<\/sup>) precision. In order \tto do so, a laser beam hits a target with a 50 femtoseconds frequency, \tthe pulse reaches the target under-observation several times with \tdifferent delays determined by the different paths, in order to study \tthe characteristics of the response to the solicitation. <\/p>\n<p> \tIn respect to a normal university department &ndash; notes Lanzani \t&ndash; the IIT Center for Nanotechnologies is <strong>not \t\tbased on the discipline but on the problems that need to be solved.<\/strong> \tWhat does it mean?
