{"id":18158,"date":"2015-12-21T09:31:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T08:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/?p=18158"},"modified":"2023-06-15T16:36:06","modified_gmt":"2023-06-15T14:36:06","slug":"plantoid-the-technological-future-of-europe-has-robotic-roots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/en\/plantoid-the-technological-future-of-europe-has-robotic-roots\/","title":{"rendered":"Plantoid: the technological future of Europe has robotic roots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Funded within the FET projects of the European Commission,&nbsp;<strong>the PLANTOID project<\/strong>, coordinated by the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), will design new generation robots inspired by plants<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more--> <\/p>\n<p>[widgetkit id=12]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plantoidproject.eu\/index.php\/the-project\/project-details\"><em><strong>Project Innovative Robotic Artefacts Inspired by Plant Roots for Soil Monitoring&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>(PLANTOID)<\/a>, which is funded within the European Commission&#8217;s prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/horizon2020\/en\/h2020-section\/fet-open\">Future and Emerging Technologies Open (FET-Open)<\/a> scheme, aims to design and develop robots inspired by plants &ndash; called &#8220;Plantoids&#8221; &ndash; which, combining a new generation of hardware and software technologies, will be able to imitate the behaviour of plant roots.<\/p>\n<p>The project involves, besides the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iit.it\/centers\/cmbr-sssa\"> CMBR of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Pisa<\/a>, the University of Florence, the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) in Barcelona and the Ecole Polytechnique F&eacute;d&eacute;rale de Lausanne (EPFL), and is&nbsp;<strong>carried out by a wide interdisciplinary scientific consortium&nbsp;<\/strong>comprising engineers, plant biologists and computer scientists.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Robotics inspired by plants is a totally innovative field,&#8221; states&nbsp;<strong>Barbara Mazzolai<\/strong>, Scientific leader of the project and Coordinator of the CMBR of the IIT in Pisa. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plantoid-project.eu\/\">The&nbsp;project PLANTOID<\/a>&nbsp;aims, on the one hand, to carry out advanced studies on the behaviour of the root apices, and subsequently on their chemical-physical and mechanical characteristics &ndash; and, on the other hand, to provide models and first prototypes of robotic roots imitating them, with a specific focus on their penetrative, explorative and adaptive capacities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In particular, researchers at the CMBR-IIT are developing the&nbsp;<strong>hardware system of the robotic root<\/strong>, the physical sensors to be integrated into the root apices, and the actuators allowing the penetration and orientation of the roots. Furthermore, they are studying in more depth&nbsp;<strong>the phenomenon of tropism<\/strong>; that is, the response of the roots to external stimuli such as nourishment and gravity. The group of the University of Florence is carrying out studies on the&nbsp;<strong>chemical- physical communication among the roots&nbsp;<\/strong>of the plant itself, which is crucial for its coordinated growth; the group at IBEC is focusing on the&nbsp;<strong>chemical sensors&nbsp;<\/strong>that root apices need to recognize different substances in the soil; and the group at the EPFL is developing the&nbsp;<strong>software architecture&nbsp;<\/strong>necessary to control the robotic structure and its sensors.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate aim of the project is to develop a&nbsp;<strong>network of sensorized robotic roots<\/strong>&nbsp;able to reproduce the capabilities of exploration, environmental adaptation and coordination typical of the plant kingdom, and to provide a model of artificial plant comparable to those found in the natural world, also in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Funded within the FET projects of the European Commission,&nbsp;the PLANTOID project, coordinated by the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), will design new generation robots inspired by plants<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":5,"featured_media":18166,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4552,4556],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18158","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-en-news","category-en-robotics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.1.1 -
