{"id":18170,"date":"2015-08-03T16:28:00","date_gmt":"2015-08-03T14:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/?p=18170"},"modified":"2024-01-10T11:08:54","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T10:08:54","slug":"photovoltaic-paper-by-iit-published-on-nature-photonics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/opentalk.iit.it\/en\/photovoltaic-paper-by-iit-published-on-nature-photonics\/","title":{"rendered":"Photovoltaic paper by IIT published on Nature Photonics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team of researchers at IIT in Milan has published a paper about hybrid perovskites in the prestigious journal Nature Photonics<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-5\" src=\"http:\/\/talk.iit.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/news\/2016\/pervoskite_fotvoltaico.jpg\" alt=\"pervoskite fotvoltaico\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Team of researchers led by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iit.it\/it\/persone\/annamaria-petrozza.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Annamaria Petrozza\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cnst.iit.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working at the\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cnst.iit.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Nanoscience and Technology (CNST)<\/a>1\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iit.it\/it\/persone\/guglielmo-lanzani.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) in Milan, coordinated by\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iit.it\/it\/persone\/guglielmo-lanzani.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guglielmo Lanzani<\/a>, just published the work entitled &#8220;<em>Role of microstructure in the electron-hole interaction of hybrid perovskites lead halide<\/em>&#8221; in the prestigious journal Nature Photonics.<\/p>\n<p>The work shows that depending on the\u00a0<strong>perovksite crystal structure\u00a0<\/strong>(where the perovskite is the light absorbing material in the solar cell)\u00a0<strong>the photons are converted into free charges\u00a0<\/strong>(electrons and holes) or in bound charge pairs (called excitons, a sort of hydrogen atom).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It seems a small detail, but from the electronic properties point of view it makes a huge difference2. The\u00a0<strong>free charges immediately produce current<\/strong>, whereas the bound charge pairs are &#8220;neutral&#8221; and often re-emit light rather than create a current,&#8221; said co-author\u00a0<strong>Guglielmo Lanzani<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The perovskites are\u00a0<strong>polycrystalline semiconductors\u00a0<\/strong>used in thin film solar cells and they have the potential to compete and hopefully overtake silicon and other more traditional photovoltaic technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last year, this material with\u00a0<strong>peculiar chemical and photophysical properties\u00a0<\/strong>has captivated the attention of the international scientific community\u00a0because it allows the fabrication of hybrid solar cells with\u00a0<strong>an efficiency of about 18%, when used as light absorbing material. <\/strong>(See also the recent paper published on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2015\/ee\/c5ee01720c#!divAbstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy and Environmental Science<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Those efficiencies are outstanding considering that the research on perovskite-based solar cells is still in embryo (the first work dates back to December 2012) if compared to the silicon one which is over fifty-years old. Moreover, the cell fabrication occurs at low temperatures, it is highly scalable and it requires a limited amount of material (the light absorbing layer is in fact hundreds of micrometres thick).
