With his appointment, IIT launches a new program to recognize leading figures in science and innovation at the international level
Avram Miller, a world-renowned scientist and innovator, has been appointed by the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) as the Institute’s first IIT Fellow. With this recognition, Avram Miller inaugurates a new IIT initiative to honor outstanding leaders in science and innovation, in line with prestigious academic and industrial traditions worldwide.
Inspired by international best practices, the initiative brings together prominent figures from science, technology, and entrepreneurship whose work has had a profound global impact.
The IIT Fellows are internationally recognized leaders in science and innovation — academics, scientists, and entrepreneurs who have achieved exceptional results in their respective fields. Their appointment represents not only a prestigious acknowledgment but also a strategic opportunity for IIT’s growth and international engagement.
Avram Miller’s appointment as an IIT Fellow acknowledges a career dedicated to innovation and the creation of global technology ecosystems.
In his new role, Miller will share his experience, knowledge, network, and visionary approach to support IIT’s mission: transforming scientific research into real-world solutions for society. He is particularly interested in exploring how robotics and artificial intelligence can address the challenges of aging populations, improving productivity, and supporting people affected by cognitive decline.
During his tenure as Intel’s Vice President of Business Development, Avram Miller co-founded Intel Capital, which became the leading corporate venture capital fund of its time. He played a key role in the large-scale development of the Internet and was instrumental in expanding residential broadband, which helped shape today’s connected world.
After leaving Intel in 1999, Miller has continued to provide strategic advice to technology companies and to invest in startups. He has been repeatedly listed on the Forbes Midas List of the world’s top 100 venture investors. Coming from a medical science background, Miller has focused much of his attention on the intersection of technology and healthcare.
The IIT Fellows program aims to strengthen IIT’s global reputation and impact by fostering collaborations with prominent figures whose vision and expertise can significantly contribute to advancing knowledge and innovation. IIT Fellows also serve as ambassadors of the Institute within their professional communities worldwide.
Appointed by IIT’s Scientific Director, Fellows may participate in the full range of the Institute’s activities — from academic research to technology transfer, education, and mentoring — and are encouraged to engage openly with IIT researchers to identify new opportunities for collaboration.
“I am honored to have been appointed as a Fellow of the Italian Institute of Technology. This role will allow me to continue contributing to the development of technologies that benefit humanity, while also growing personally through interactions with some of Europe’s leading scientists and technologists,” said Avram Miller.
“We are delighted to welcome Avram Miller as the first IIT Fellow. His visionary approach to innovation and his commitment to applying technology for the benefit of society are perfectly aligned with our mission. With his contribution, we aim to expand the impact of our research and strengthen our international collaborations,” said Giorgio Metta, Scientific Director of IIT.
Avram Miller, as keynote speaker, will give a talk entitled at “It no longer matters what you know, it only matters what you can imagine” EDGE 2025 – Finance and Frontier Innovation, a technology transfer event addressing key issues in finance and deep tech, organized in collaboration with the World Business Forum, to be held on November 11th at Allianz MiCo Milano Congressi.
