With the best performance improvement among Italian Institutes, IIT has been ranked by the journal Nature among the 100 research institutes and universities in the  world that in the period 2012-2015 have published scientific articles in high impact journals. “Since 2012, the institute’s scientists increased their contribution to index papers more than any other Italian Institution”.

The ranking of Nature Index / Rising Stars is based on the ability of individual institutions to contribute to 68 of the high-quality journals selected by an international panel of scientists, defined by the WFC parameter (performance IIT has increased by a 22:42 WFC in 2012 41.39 in 2015). IIT appears also among the 25 institutions deserving a profile in the article on the last issue of Nature, with an interview with Roberto Cingolani, Scientific Director of IIT, and the aknowledgement of the iCub robot as the world’s most well-known example of the IIT results.

The Nature Index is a database of author affiliation information collated from research articles published in an independently selected group of 68 high-quality science journals. The database is compiled by Nature Research. The Nature Index provides a close to real-time proxy for high-quality research output at the institutional, national and regional level.

The parameter on which the current ranking is based is the Weighted Fractional Count (WFC). The WFC is a modified version of Fractional Count (FC) in which fractional counts for articles from specialist astronomy and astrophysics journals have been down weighted.
