Il discorso del direttore scientifico uscente dell’IIT

Questa è la prima vota che scrivo un discorso, dato che normalmente improvviso. Ma volevo lasciarvi alcuni messaggi e volevo essere certo che fossero scritti da qualche parte, perché possano essere conservati. Così magari li riascolterete nuovamente fra 15 anni e farete una verifica dei fatti.
Decidere di lasciare IIT è stata una decisione difficile. IIT è una fantastica realtà di ricerca scientifica. Quello che siamo riusciti a realizzare in dodici anni non ha eguali nel mondo. La prima sfida è stata, appunto, crearlo, nonostante un sistema poco amichevole, se non addirittura ostile certe volte.
Ma ce l’abbiamo fatta!
Oggi IIT è considerata dalla comunità scientifica una realtà eccezionale nel campo degli istituti di ricerca di tutto il mondo.
Ma come abbiamo fatto?
Perché abbiamo lavorato duro, siamo stati intellettualmente onesti, abbiamo adottato un approccio visionario e siamo stati giusti e meritocratici.
La sfida che ci attende è quella di mantenere questo stato di cose, ma migliorarne la qualità. Il sogno è quello che in dieci anni IIT possa essere conosciuto come un’eccellenza nel mondo della ricerca non sono dagli addetti ai lavori, ma anche da chi non fa parte del mondo scientifico. Un patrimonio per l’Italia, non un semplice istituto di ricerca.
Per questo motivo ho pensato che fosse tempo di lasciare il timone a qualcuno più giovane e più in gamba di me. Inoltre era il momento di uscire dalla comfort-zone, quel luogo di connessione non tangibile fra i figli di IIT (tutti voi) ed il padre (ovvero me). Nonostante sia stato a lungo la forza motrice ed il catalizzatore per IIT per un lungo periodo di tempo, sono certo che nel lungo periodo avrei finito per essere una limitazione, come spesso capita quando le istituzioni vengono identificate con un individuo e non viceversa.
Questi quindici anni sono stati straordinari ed i risultati sono tangibili. Nessuno può contestarne gli esiti. Ma è ora di girare pagina e passare al secondo livello.
Dovrete provare che IIT non è stato un’esperienza fine a se stessa. Abbiamo raggiunto un punto di non ritorno e tutti voi potrete crescere ancora, diventare più competitivi, più attrattivi e più forti. Potete diventare modelli, dare l’esempio e superare i vostri limiti. Se un limite esiste, esiste solo dentro voi stessi, quindi sorpassatelo e basta.
Per farlo siate lungimiranti, guardate avanti, non smettete di chiedervi quali siano i problemi e quali le soluzioni possibili.
Lottate contro la burocrazia inutile e lottate contro la mediocrità e contro l’ipocrisia. Non dimenticate di essere scienziati globali in una comunità globale. Ma soprattutto aiutate e supportate i più giovani.

This is the first time I write a speech as I normally improvise, but I wanted to leave you a few messages making sure that they could be “stored” somewhere.
Deciding to leave IIT was a difficult choice. IIT is a great scientific institution. What we did in 12 years has no comparison in the world. The first challenge was to make it, against an unfriendly, sometimes hostile system which was not helpful.
We made it!!
Today IIT is considered as anoutstanding research institution worldwide by the research community.
Howwe made it?
Becausewe were working hard, we were intellectually honest, we were visionary and wewere fair but meritocratic.
Thenext challenge now is to keep the steady state while improving quality. The dream is that in ten years IIT willbe considered as an outstanding researchinstitute not only by experts but also by non expert people. Asocial asset of the country, not simply a research institute.
Forthis I thought it was time to leave the lead to somebody younger and brighterthen me. Also it was time to break the comfort zone, the intangible but verystrong connection between the IIT children (you) and the father (me). Despite I have been the IIT engine and theIIT facilitator for quite a while, I am sure that in the long run I could haveturned into a limiting factor, as always happens when institutions areidentified in a person , and not the other way around: a person that serves theinstitution.
These15 years have been absolutely outstanding and the results are tangible. Nobodycan deny the value of our accomplishments. Butnow you have to turn page. Get into the second level.
Youhave to show that IIT is not asingularity. That a non return point has been passed: you can grow further, getmore competitive, more attractive, stronger…..you can set the standard, givethe example, overcome the limits. Ifthere is a limit this is only inside yourself, just break it.
Todo this be visionary, look forward, never stop asking yourself which are theproblems and which are the possible solutions.
Fightagainst the useless, unmotivated bureaucracy, fight against mediocrity, fightagainst hypocrisy. Do not forget that you are global scientists in a globalcommunity. But above all HELP AND SUPPORT the young people.
